Check with your airline, prep for delays as snow returns

I'm not a forecaster, so I can't say what tomorrow's weather will bring. But if it's anything more than a few inches of snow, you can count on airport delays. And if the Northeast - meaning New York, Boston, Hartford - gets anything like the snowmageddon we got pummeled by a few weeks ago, you can count on cancellations.

If you're scheduled to fly from Baltimore to any place north of Philadelphia anytime between mid-afternoon tomorrow and Friday morning, I would consider rescheduling. Most airlines already are offering weather waivers which will allow you to change your flight without paying a fee. At BWI, spokesman Jonathan Dean said "BWI will have its full snow team activated in preparation for whatever snow and ice Mother Nature may send our way."

I'm sure BWI will do a great job, but even if we get fairly light snow, the winds are expected to become a significant factor, with some forecasting them at or near hurricane strength. That makes it a wee bit difficult for takeoffs and landings. And keep in mind that when places like Newark or LaGuardia airports get backed up, it affects the entire system. Still, as of right now, no proactive cancellations at BWI for either AirTran or Southwest. But as usual, please call your airline before heading to the airport tomorrow.
