We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in ...San Antonio? I know there's no rhyme, but there is a reason AirTran announced today that it will offer a single daily flight between Baltimore and San Antonio this summer. Currently, Southwest has two daily flights to San Antonio, so AirTran makes three.
The destination didn't make sense to me at first, but then I talked with Christopher White, a spokesman for AirTran, about the new route. After he needled me for never having visited The Alamo, White gave me the lowdown on the hoedown that is San Antonio.
"The Baltimore-San Antonio route is a good one. Especially coming from Texas...going to Baltimore gives you access to the entire Northeast," he said. "Also, San Antonio is a big military town, so lots of military personnel go there for training. The new route gives them [soldiers] access to Washington DC and Baltimore, since BWI has a huge a military presence."
It's funny. I always look at new routes as new places for me to go. Don't usually think about the folks on the other end. Of course, it makes perfect sense that people in Texas might want to spend their summer vacation in Washington. With all the politicians gone, they can even have a tea party on the Mall.
