Here's the latest on the Washington Wizards version of the Shootout at the OK Corral: Gilbert Arenas now says he brought unloaded guns into the locker room as a "joke."
Some joke. What, the novelty store was all out of rubber snakes?
I'm still trying to imagine Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton each grabbing a heater and squaring off over a gambling debt, as initial reports indicated.
Law enforcement authorities are still investigating the incident, which occurred two weeks ago. After that both Arenas and Crittenton will have to answer to a higher power: NBA commissioner David Stern, who is expected to come down harshly on both players.
In the meantime, the whole thing has made the Wizards even more of a national laughing-stock than they already were.
We leave you with three gems from David Letterman's "Top 10 Washington Wizards Explanations" for the near-shootout:
9. "Team recently signed an endoresement deal with Smith & Wesson.
6. "Two players can't pull guns over a locker room gambling dispute? What is this, Russia?"
And my personal favorite, having taken in my share of Wizards games over the years:
4. "When you're the Washington Wizards, any press is good press."
Now THAT'S a joke.
