Mangini on firing Kokinis

Soon after Eric Mangini was hired as head coach of the Browns, he brought George Kokinis to Cleveland as his general manager. They were close friends and their relationship was believed to be very solid, however unusual it was for a coach to hire the GM.

After the Browns lost in Week 8 at Chicago, 30-6, however, Kokinis was fired "with cause," although no reasons have been specified.

This morning, Mangini addressed the stunning dismissal of the former Ravens' personnel executive. It was pretty much the same line he gave Cleveland reporters after Kokinis was removed.

"Any time a decision like this is made -- especially with George, who I've known for a long time personally and professionally and been friends with -- it's difficult," Mangini said. "And it is a situation where I wish him and his family nothing but the best. I can tell you that anytime you go into a relationship like this, you are looking for it to work out. You never anticipate it not working out. But it didn't for a variety of reasons. And I thought organizationally it was best to move on and there's really nothing more that I can add to that."
