It took Jason Berken just 1 1/3 innings to render just about everything I wrote in my earlier post about him pretty much irrelevant. I'm a student of body language (I practice by reading Pamela Anderson whenever I get the chance) and I could tell by the look on Dave Trembley's face when he headed for the mound in the second inning that Berken had run out of rope -- and not just in this game.
Even so, I'm not going to go out on a limb and predict that Jake Arrieta or Troy Patton should catch a cab to the ballpark to catch today's charter flight. I think the club should just suck it up and bring in Chris Waters, even though he hasn't knocked anybody's socks off recently.
Really, nobody at Triple-A is making an argument for the next promotion. There's an opportunity here, but Waters has been struggling and David Pauley, Arrieta and Andy Mitchell are all coming off poor outings. Somehow, the team that had a total of 38 pitches in camp this spring has run out of viable minor league options unless Andy MacPhail is willing to make another bold promotion before Brian Matusz has even arrived.
