The South Atlantic League named Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds right fielder Ronnie Welty to the 2009 postseason All-Star team, the team announced in a news release.
The 21-year-old outfielder is at least tied for the lead on the Shorebirds in seven offensive categories. Welty is tied for the most home runs on the team (nine), and he is first on the team with a .294 batting average, 121 hits, 24 doubles and 61 RBIs. He is also leading the team in on-base percentage (.373) and slugging percentage (.422).
Welty is also third on the Shorebirds with 59 runs scored, and his batting average is tied for 10th in the South Atlantic League.The announcement concludes a season full of awards for Welty, who was named the Orioles Minor League Player of the Month in June after hitting .315 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. He was also selected as the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for his performance from June 8-14.
Welty, the Orioles' 20th-round selection in the 2008 MLB draft, also represented the Shorebirds in the midseason South Atlantic All-Star Game.
The 16 managers, general managers, sports writers and broadcasters voted for the postseason awards in the South Atlantic League.
The Shorebirds finish the 2009 season with eight home games against the Lake County Captains and the Lakewood BlueClaws.
