Foster hopes big play resonates with coaches

Jayson Foster's biggest play occurred late in the Ravens' 23-0 defeat of the Washington Redskins at M&T Bank Stadium Thursday night, but it was the kind of performance that could make a lasting impression with the coaching staff.

On second-down-and-10 from the Ravens' 29-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, quarterback John Beck threw a pass towards Foster, who ran a hook pattern along the right sideline.

Safety Michael Grant read the play, but the football went through his hands and into Foster's. The 5-foot-7, 185-pound wide receiver quickly turned around and raced downfield, eventually getting tackled at Washington's 7 for a 64-yard gain. On the ensuing play, rookie running back Cedric Peerman rumbled into the end zone.

"Beck made a good throw, and it kind of happened to stick to me," Foster said. "After that, you want to get upfield and get vertical and get as many yards as possible."

Foster, who also returned one punt 21 yards, is fighting an uphill battle, competing with Kelley Washington, Justin Harper, Yamon Figurs, Ernie Wheelwright and rookie Eron Riley for a coveted spot in the receiving corps.

Asked if he made an impression with his effort, Foster said, "You hope so, but you really can't worry about the impression that you make. Right now, you're trying to play the best ball you can and let them decide what's a good impression and what's not."
