Maryland's Torrey Smith set a single-season Atlantic Coast Conference record for kickoff-return yards last year. But it wasn't enough for him to be named the return specialist on the preseason All-ACC football team named by the media.
Smith capped his season by returning a kick 99 yards for a touchdown in the Humanitarian Bowl. He averaged 25.9 yards per return, 22nd in the nation.
But Clemson's C.J. Spiller averaged 27.1 yards per return and was named the first-team return specialist. Spiller did not return as many kicks as Smith, which is why the Terrapin ended up with more overall yardage.
Maryland did place punter Travis Baltz and linebacker Alex Wujciak on the first team.
