Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds starting pitcher Nathan Moreau was selected as the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 13-19, the league announced today.
The 22-year-old left-hander was 2-0 with 13 scoreless innings during the week, and he collected nine strikeouts and only allowed six hits in the two starts.
The Orioles' eighth-round selection in the 2008 MLB draft tossed seven innings against the Lexington Legends on July 13, giving up three hits and striking out four batters. On July 18, Moreau surrendered three hits in six innings. He struck out five batters and issued one walk.
Moreau hasn't allowed a run in his past 15 2/3 innings, a stretch that dates back to July 6 against the Kannapolis Intimidators. In five starts since the All-Star break, he is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Overall, Moreau is 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 13 starts for the Shorebirds in 2009.
Shorebirds right fielder Ronnie Welty earned South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors last month, but Moreau is the first Delmarva pitcher to be recognized by the league so far this season.
