Ralph Friedgen spent much of the early portion of yesterday's media interviews at the ACC Football Kickoff conference answering questions about his diet.

The latest:

*He started at 401 pounds and has lost 95 to put him at 306. "I'd like to lose 150," he said.

*He said he almost passed out at a practice when he began the diet -– a blood sugar issue. It happened after he had lost 16 pounds in the diet's first week. He had probably lost 60 pounds by the Humanitarian Bowl in late December.

*He had contemplated surgery but decided dieting – no more pasta etc. – was the better approach. Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid is also dieting and told Fridge "I'm going to catch you" in weight loss, Friedgen said.

*Darrius Heyward-Bey's mother gave Friedgen an odd compliment related to Boise State's blue football field, where the Terps played their December bowl game. Fridge said she told him: "Coach, that blue field makes you look skinny."

And a football note: Fridge loves kicker Nick Ferrara's distance. Ferrara, who is on scholarship, has a great shot of being the kickoff man. The field-goal kicking competition remains open.
