Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds right fielder Ronnie Welty was honored as the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for his performance from June 8 to 14.
The 21-year-old outfielder batted .517 with three home runs, nine RBIs and nine runs scored for Delmarva during the week. Welty is the first Shorebirds player to earn the award in 2009.
Welty, who was named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team, was 15-for-29 during the time period, and he hit safely in all seven games. Welty is currently on a nine-game hitting streak heading into tonight's doubleheader against the Lakewood BlueClaws.
Welty, the Orioles' 20th-round selection in the 2008 MLB draft, leads the Shorebirds in batting average (.332), hits (65), RBIs (33), home runs (six) and runs scored (33).
Welty was named an Appalachian League All-Star in 2008 while playing for the rookie-level Bluefield Orioles. He hit .314 with three home runs and 34 RBIs in 55 games.
