Orioles draft ex-Calvert Hall standout Velleggia

In the 42nd round of the 2009 MLB draft, the Orioles selected Old Dominion catcher Joe Velleggia.

The 20-year-old redshirt sophomore was a standout athlete at Calvert Hall, where he was a member of the Cardinals' MIAA A Conference championship teams in 2005 and 2006.

Velleggia batted .281 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 20 games for the Monarchs this season. He has been bothered by injuries over the past two seasons at Old Dominion.

Velleggia was named to The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro first team in back-to-back seasons in 2005 and 2006.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound catcher batted .418, and led the Baltimore area in runs scored (41) and RBIs (45) in 2006. He also ranked first on the Cardinals with four home runs and 16 doubles during that season. Velleggia hit .485 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs in 2005.
