While Matt Wieters is making his major league debut with the Orioles this weekend, the Double-A Bowie Baysox will be running a series of promotions for fans.
On Friday night, the Baysox will attempt to set the world record for most people wearing sunglasses at night. All fans who participate in the event must register in order for the record to be considered official, and the first 1,000 fans to sign up will receive a free pair of sunglasses. The game against the Harrisburg Senators is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. at Prince George's Stadium.
OK, you know I am going to take this opportunity to link to Corey Hart's hit from the 1980s, so here is the link to the YouTube video. I would just embed the player into this entry, but we need to keep some sense of order with O's on Deck. When the Baysox host the Senators on Saturday, the members of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League will be honored. The women will take part in an on-field ceremony before the game starts at 7:05 p.m. They will toss out ceremonial first pitches and meet with fans for autographs and photos following the national anthem.
The six former players who will attend the festivities are Sarah Jane "Salty" (Sands) Ferguson, Ruth "Rocky" (Kramer) Hartman, Gloria (Cordes) Elliott, Joanne McComb, Gertrude (Alderfer) Benner, Joyce Steele and Ruth "Richy" Richard.
Phillip Wrigley founded the AAGPBL in 1943, and the league was composed of 11 teams around the country before it was disbanded in 1954. It was featured in A League of Their Own with Tom Hanks, Rosie O'Donnell, Geena Davis and Madonna.
