The Triple-A Norfolk Tides lost in a close game, but the Single-A Frederick Keys and Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds earned victories in the final games of their series.

The Tides travel to play the Charlotte Knights tomorrow at 7:15 p.m., while the Double-A Bowie Baysox return to action on the road against the Erie SeaWolves at 6:35 p.m.


The Keys head to Myrtle Beach for four games against the Pelicans beginning at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Delmarva begins a three-game series with the Hagerstown Suns tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Durham Bulls 2, Norfolk Tides 1 (Box score)

Recap: In a classic pitchers' duel, Durham edged the Tides, 2-1, after scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Norfolk relief pitcher Jim Miller (0-1).

Tides starter David Hernandez struck out nine hitters in 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run and two hits. The 23-year-old right-hander walked two batters. Wade Davis gave up one run and two hits in four innings for the Bulls. He collected five strikeouts and issued three walks.

Norfolk catcher Matt Wieters picked up his first hit of the season, but he was 1-for-4 in the game. Overall, the 22-year-old prospect is hitting .091 (1-for-11) through three games. Right fielder Lou Montanez had two of the Tides' four hits, and he is now batting .583 (7-for-12) this season.

Ex-Orioles right-hander Winston Abreu (1-0) earned the win for Durham after pitching two perfect innings.Frederick Keys (A)

Score: Frederick Keys 3, Salem Red Sox 2 (Box score)

Recap: Tim Bascom (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings, and the Keys bullpen held on for a 3-2 victory over Salem in the series finale. The 24-year-old right-hander gave up four hits and one walk in the game.

Keys first baseman Brandon Waring remained hot, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Second baseman Ryan Adams was 2-for-5 with a double for Frederick. Keys designated hitter Billy Rowell was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

John Mariotti allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits in three innings for the Keys. Cliff Flagello pitched a scoreless inning to earn his first save of the season for Frederick.

Delmarva Shorebirds (A)

Score: Delmarva Shorebirds 14, Lakewood BlueClaws 5 (Box score)

Recap: Twelve of the Shorebirds' 14 hits were singles, but it was more than enough in a 14-5 victory over the BlueClaws.

Designated hitter Joe Mahoney paced the Shorebirds by going 4-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and six RBIs. Delmarva outfielder Ronnie Welty was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Jacob Julius also scored three times for the Shorebirds.

Delmarva starting pitcher Nathan Nery (1-0) earned the victory after giving up two runs and five hits in five innings. The 23-year-old left-hander walked three hitters and collected three strikeouts.

Relief pitcher Brandon Cooney struggled with his control for the Shorebirds. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up three runs in 1 1/3 innings. He walked four hitters, hit three batters and threw two wild pitches in the outing.


Every Shorebirds starter had at least one hit in the game.
