Manager Dave Trembley had nothing but nice things to say about starter Mark Hendrickson and his 5 1/3-inning performance tonight against the defending AL champion Tampa Bay Rays.

"Hendrickson did a very nice job,'' Trembley said, "He changed speeds very well, located, and did a very nice job.

"When I went out to the mound (in the sixth) to see how he was, he said 'Dave, I gave it everything I had,' so I knew it was the right time to get him out of there."

Trembley also was very impressed with the performance of Danys Baez, who pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings and struck out four to build a bridge to setup man Jim Johnson and closer George Sherrill.

"Baez has been very good for us,'' Trembley said. "Obviously the difference is he's using all his pitches. In spring training he was basically just a fastball guy. I think in the shorter periods he knows he's going to go out there, his velocity is up and he's got better movement. He bridged tonight and got us to where we needed to go."

On Sherrill: "That's the first time we've seen the ball come out of the hand for George like thast. He had some crispness, velocity was up, and the ball was quick, so that was good to see."
