Orioles: Baez surprises

Orioles: Baez surprises

Funny, but I'm not hearing from anybody who was clamoring for the Orioles to release Danys Baez at the end of spring training. There were a lot of posts calling on the Orioles to eat his remaining salary and cut him loose for the good of all concerned. Now, everybody is thrilled with the way his split-finger fastball is making some pretty good hitters look pretty bad.

It's early, of course, but Baez has made two very impressive relief appearances and vindicated the decision of manager Dave Trembley to move him into the bullpen after auditioning him as a starting pitcher all spring.

Baez said Friday night that he doesn't care where he pitches. He's just enjoying the opportunity to be so competitive after spending more than a year on the sidelines recovering from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery.

"I just want to be out there facing hitters and trying to get them out,'' he said. "I don't want to worry about anything else. It's great to be out in the bullpen with those guys. I've spent most of my career in the bullpen, so to be out there is exciting and to be doing good is great."

Maybe it won't last, but Baez and his teammates are enjoying it while it does.
