Big night on the farm (updated)

Top pitching prospects Jake Arrieta and Brian Matusz made their first regular-season starts in the minor leagues tonight.

Arrieta just left the game after pitching four innings for the Double-A Bowie Baysox and dominating the Akron Aeros. He struck out eight and gave up just one hit and two walks before giving way to left-hander Bobby Livingston. Akron eventually came from behind to score a 2-1 victory.

Matusz pitched 4 2/3 innings in the season opener for Class-A Frederick at Salem (Red Sox) and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four. The Keys scored the first four runs of the game in the top of the third and were leading 5-2 when Matusz left the game. Frederick went on to win, 8-6, in 12 innings.

Brad Bergesen also kicked off his minor league season -- which probably won't last very long -- with a solid five innings (four hits, one earned run) at Triple-A Norfolk.
