Grammy nomination goes to Maryland alum

Woyneab Miraf Wondwossen (Wayna) of Ethopia is a graduate of the University of Maryland whose sophomore CD Higher Ground has garnered her a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Alternative Audience.

Her talent was groomed at the university where she was crowned Miss Black Unity of the University of Maryland and started a gospel quartet. The success of the group took them to the Apollo Theater in Harlem, where they were a finalist in the Amateur Night competition.

Wayna would branch off from that group as a soloist with a gospel choir, which would lead to new opportunities away from gospel but into R&B.
