John Legend has gospel-informed, political voice

When John Legend was in college, he worked two jobs and commuted regularly to Scranton, Pa., to lead a gospel choir and directed an a cappella group on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, all while taking classes.

Legend sang with the Agape Choir of Culver City, Calif., in one of many performances at the Democratic National Convention last week in Denver. There he unveiled "If You Are Out There,'' a single from his CD Evolve,r which will be released next month.

In an interview with Legend done days before the DNC but at a party event, we learn more about why he's jumped into the political arena.
