I'm currently participating in a 12-team mixed league with 11 members of Hardcore Country.
The scoring system is 5x5 roto with one disabled list spot. Each week I'll list my rosters, the moves I made and a brief update on what I'm thinking with some of the players.
Currently, I'm in fourth place.
1. Added: Melvin Mora, 3B (BAL)
My lineup needs some help and Melvin Mora might be the answer. Here are his stats, post All-Star break. I'm not making these up: .384 AVG, 6 HR, 14 R, 32 RBIs. Yes, he's hitting .384. The power is so-so and the runs are low, but he's connecting at a very high rate right now. I need some production.
1. Dropped: Carl Crawford, OF (TB)
The news broke that Crawford is going to miss most -- if not the rest -- of the season. In a roto league, I have to cut him loose.
2. Added: Clayton Kershaw, P (LAD)
The Dodgers' young stud looks like he is on the rise. He's allowed just four earned runs in his last 25 innings pitched (four starts) with 23 strikeouts. He's a decent source of strikeouts and hopefully wins too as the Dodgers try to make a run for the playoffs.
2. Dropped: Ubaldo Jimenez, P (COL)
After posting a 5-1 record in July, Jimenez is 1-2 in August with a 5.00 ERA. His WHIP has jumped up to 1.77 and at this point, it looks like his season has culminated into one good month. I'll pass for now.
3. Added: Ramon Hernandez, C (BAL)
It takes a real man to admit to his mistakes and that's what I'm doing here: I should have added Hernandez instead of Chris Iannetta a few weeks ago. But now I might be buying Hernandez as he's in decline. He has cooled off in August (.257, 0 HR, 4 RBI), but here's hoping he finds his way.
3. Dropped: Chris Iannetta, C (COL))
This guy can't beat out Yorvit Torrealba for a job. Ouch. I will say that Torrealba is better defensively, though. Still, he's supposed to be an up-and-coming prospect, but I guess this elevator isn't going to the penthouse. It's stopped on the third floor and there's definitely no parties around.
Iannetta is batting .148 this month with just four RBIs.
4. Added: Troy Glaus, 3B (STL)
If you are looking for a team to trade with, talk to the Toronto Blue Jays. Not that they have much of what you'd want, but GM J.P. Ricciardi, who will be out of work shortly (everyone hopes) can't do anything right. Ricciardi traded Troy Glaus for Scott Rolen and not only did he get fleeced on that one, that fleece has been used to make a nice sweater with the words embroidered: "Merci Beaucoup, J.P."
Rolen's 2008 stats: 88 GP, .252 AVG, 7 HR, 38 RBI, 40 R, .966 FPCT
Glaus' 2008 stats: 119 GP, .275 AVG, 21 HR, 81 RBI, 56 R, .984 FPCT
Glaus is batting .302 with three home runs and eight RBIs in August.
4. Dropped: Mike Lowell, 3B (BOS)
Lowell is batting just .208 since the start of July and he needs to be cut loose. He's landed on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain, if the poor production wasn't reason enough to sever ties.
5. Added: Cesar Izturis, SS (STL)
I'm in desperate need of production at shortstop and it just so happens that Izturis was the highest-ranked available free agent at the position.
Izturis is batting .296 with four RBIs, 13 runs and seven stolen bases since the All-Star break. That's not overwhelming, but I need some help at the position and he's being productive.
5. Dropped: J.J. Hardy, SS (MIL)
I rode the J.J. Hardy wave through some of June and all of July, but that wave has hit its high point and has now rolled back to sea. Hardy has two home runs, three RBIs and eight runs, but is hitting just .152 this month. That's not good enough for me.
