Bluefield Orioles outfielder Ronnie Welty was one of 14 players named to the Appalachian League's postseason All-Star team.
St. Louis Cardinals hitting prospect Curt Smith was selected as the league's Player of the Year and Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Dan Osterbrock was honored as the Pitcher of the Year.
I'd like to offer special thanks to reader/poster Mike for pointing out this article on the league's Web site that announces the members of the postseason list.
Through Friday night, Welty is hitting .310 with two home runs and 32 RBIs in 53 games. He has 13 doubles and 25 runs scored. The 20-year-old outfielder was selected by the Orioles in the 20th round of this year's MLB draft.
Speaking of Bluefield, switch-hitting first baseman Elvin Polanco is leading the team with a .321 batting average, 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. The 21-year-old native of the Dominican Republic is 10th in the league in batting average, tied for fifth in home runs and tied for fifth in RBIs.
Bluefield is currently 27-35 and in third place in the East Division, 9 1/2 games behind the Pulaski Mariners. Including today's game, the Orioles have four games remaining in the 2008 season.
