I'm currently participating in a 12-team mixed league with 11 members of Hardcore Country.
The scoring system is 5x5 roto with one disabled list spot. Each week I'll list my rosters, the moves I made and a brief update on what I'm thinking with some of the players.
Currently, I'm in third place.
1. Added: Masa Kobayashi, RP (CLE)
The Cleveland Indians regular closer, Joe Borowski, got the hook and Masa Kobayashi is the first in line to see some save opportunities. The problem is, the Indians are terrible and he might not see many chances. Nonetheless, I'll own him for now because of the potential.
1. Dropped: Joe Borowski, RP (CLE)
Not a whole lot to report here. The Indians sent him packing, so I had to as well. I get the feeling that somebody will give him a chance, but for now he has no value to anyone, in both fantasy and reality leagues.
2. Added: Scott Baker, SP (MIN)
I basically convinced myself to add Scott Baker in my pitcher six-pack last week. Also, Patrick Davitt from Baseball HQ came on THE Hardcore Fantasy show and raved about Baker, which helped. He's held an opponent to three runs or less in 19 of his last 20 starts and he's won three of his last four starts. He's dealing right now and should be owned in most leagues.
2. Dropped: Brett Myers, SP (PHI)
In head-to-head leagues, you can probably afford to keep Brett Myers on your roster. Even in deeper leagues, you aren't going to dump a guy of his ilk when he still has the potential to have a strong second half. But I'm in a roto league and a guy like Scott Baker was available. I'll use him for now and maybe add Myers when he's back up with the Phillies.
3. Added: J.J. Hardy, SS (MIL)
J.J. Hardy was batting .242 on June 10th. Today, he's hitting .294. Hardy has nine home runs, 18 runs and 22 RBIs in that span. Hardy is the 13th most valuable player over the last month in my 5 x 5 league, which means he has to be on my roster. Since he's moved up in the batter order, he has been on fire.
3. Dropped: Orlando Cabrera, SS (CHW)
O-Cab had a crazy month of June but started to cool off once the calendar flipped to July. He's only registered hits in three games this month. After notching 17 and 18 runs per month over the last two, he's only pace for less than eight this month. Quite frankly, he has become expendable.
A commenter (or is it commentator?) was surprised to hear that Mike Lowell was available in my league. As mentioned, this is a 12-team league where we start only one third baseman and have only utility spot. The third baseman (or eligible for 3B) owned are:
