MLB e-mail: George Sherrill on the trading block

Dave,

I'm in a 4x4 AL-only keeper league. What's the 'inside' skinny on George Sherrill? Is he gone in the next week? What do you put as the odds he stays as the O's closer? I would think that if he goes anywhere it will not be to close, even if he stays in the American League.

Recently discussing a trade for him, but all of this buzz makes it seem way too risky.

Thanks in advance.

The Sun reported that the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers are at the top of the list for George Sherrill, but the Brewers don't seem to want to pay the high price. If they are unlikely to do it, I would be surprised if the Cardinals did either.

Other teams that I have heard are the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers. The Angels are already one of the best teams in baseball, so I don't think they will make any significant moves before the deadline. The Tigers might, but they have also complained about the big price tag for the Orioles closer.

Obviously, all of this is speculation, but my guess is that the Orioles are asking too much for him, which is not a bad idea in a time where so many teams are within sniffing distance of the playoffs and one of them might be desperate. But if nobody is -- and right now no one is -- then they'll keep him.

His fantasy value would shoot up if he landed somewhere like Milwaukee or St. Louis. In St. Louis, he would become the closer for sure. He probably would be the closer in Milwaukee as well. If he stays in the AL, Detroit would probably be the best destination for his fantasy value, although there would be no guarantees about his role there.

Either the Orioles drop the price tag or he'll be staying. I think he stays, but that's just my opinion.

P.S. -- Odds on Sherrill staying the O's closer: -125
