Morning dose of Brian Roberts

Memo to Pete Carroll: Don't do it. You have twice the talent at USC that you'll find in Atlanta. You're a very big fish in a big pond. Think of Steve Spurrier and don't mess up a good thing. Otherwise, two years from now, you'll be interviewing for the Baylor job.

As I wipe the sleep from my eyes and curse myself for turning down the heat to 65 yesterday and forgetting to bump it back up later – it's always fun to wake up shivering during the night and then debate whether you have the energy to stumble downstairs and check the thermostat – I can safely say that Brian Roberts is still an Oriole. And I anticipate him being one when I go to bed tonight, and through the weekend. But nothing is etched in stone, except that someone in the Spears family will become pregnant before spring.

All indications are that talks are continuing between the two sides. There are no indications that a deal has been presented to owner Peter Angelos, that he's approved one or he's nixed one, or anything of that nature. Believe what you want. It's more fun that way.

At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if Roberts and Erik Bedard report to Fort Lauderdale Stadium next month, but the Cubs and Mariners can change that in a hurry. They're on the clock. They know that Orioles president Andy MacPhail won't keep the lines of communication open much longer. It all depends on whether they sweeten the pot. (insert Ricky Williams joke here).

Here are the projected National League lineups, if you're interested. Of course, they're all subject to change. (For example, the Cubs could have a different second baseman on Opening Day):
