Going bowling

I just received a call from Gary Cavalli, executive director of the Emerald Bowl. An announcement should come later today, and it appears that Maryland’s football team is going to San Francisco for the Dec. 28 game.

"At this point, we’d definitely like to take Maryland," Cavalli said.

Emerald Bowl officials needed to make sure that two Atlantic Coast Conference teams weren’t going to be chosen for a BCS bowl – a possibility if Hawaii lost last night, which it didn’t.

"It looks like it’s 99.9 percent certain that won’t happen," Cavalli said.

Cavalli said part of the Terps’ appeal is how they finished strong in shutting out North Carolina State to become bowl eligible at 6-6. He also pointed to the program’s national reputation and how fans can easily catch a flight to San Francisco, unlike some other cities in the ACC.

Maryland is 9-10-2 in its bowl history, including a school-record three consecutive wins. The Terps defeated Purdue, 24-7, in last year’s Champs Sports Bowl.
