Mega Ramp a mega danger

There was a spectacular wipeout during the X Games last night in Los Angeles that highlighted an ongoing debate within the action sports community.

The so-called Mega Ramp event, where Australian skateboarder Jake Brown took a horrendous fall, is deemed by some of those athletes as more "spectacle" than competition, to paraphrase Olympic snowboarding goal medalist Shaun White, who is also a skateboarder.

In the video below from the X Games, you'll see Brown complete the first part of his run successfully and then lose control falling 45 to 50 feet. He hits the ramp so hard, the impact knocks his shoes off but he winds up recovering and walking off under his own steam.

Dundalk's Bucky Lasek, now one of the veterans of the action sports circuit, said of the Mega Ramp in a New York Times article, "Evel Knievel is going to be stoked."

Here's Brown's fall that he miraculously survived.
