Garrett's a go

The Orioles recalled Garrett Olson from Triple-A Norfolk today and optioned Kurt Birkins to the Tides.

Olson only went two innings in his last start, so he can pitch tomorrow against the Boston Red Sox. Brian Burres is going to the bullpen.

It sounds like the Cleveland Indians claimed Chris Gomez so they could block him from going to the Detroit Tigers. If the Orioles pulled back Gomez, no big loss for the Tribe. I'm not sure they really wanted him.

That wasn't the case with John Parrish. The Seattle Mariners wanted him and were willing to make a trade.

The Orioles want to evaluate Freddie Bynum for 2008, and having Gomez around was going to make it more difficult. That much I understand. But I still would have pulled him back. Send down Brandon Fahey to make room for Bynum when he comes off the disabled list. Manager Dave Trembley could use him, and the man's trying to win games this year.

Let Gomez sign with a contender next year if we want to be all warm and fuzzy here. But letting him walk for $20,000 was a waste.
