As midnight approaches...

Still no announcement on the Orioles and top draft pick Matt Wieters reaching agreement on a contract.

It appears, as a co-worker told me, "that ship has sailed."

The two sides are about $5 million apart. And Wieters apparently is willing to go back to Georgia Tech, risk injury or a down year and perhaps slip out of the top five in the 2008 draft.

Or he'll end up being the top pick and get his $11 million, or more.

Maybe the Orioles can draft him again next season and go through this dance all over again. Wouldn't that be fun?

In the meantime, it might be a good idea to get Brandon Snyder back behind the plate and sell fans on the notion that the club already found a catching prospect in the first round. Or get Eli Whiteside a new PR agent.

This is just sad.
