The convergence of sports and other elements of pop culture, particularly fashion, has become the way of the world, and no sport does it more effectively than tennis.
With American Serena Williams eliminated from the French Open yesterday by Justine Henin, it leaves Maria Sharapova as the tennis paparazzi's fave -- if not the odds-on talent favorite -- to win the tournament.
As we head into the semifinals of the French Open, a glance at the latest odds on the Internet showed Belgium's Henin as the prohibitive, less-than-even-money favorite while Sharapova is at 6-to-1. But Russia's Sharapova has an excellent chance to get to the finals against tomorrow's semifinal opponent, Serbia's Ana Ivanovic. And while Sharapova may not be be the most dominating player in women's tennis, she does personify that sport's association with the glitterati.
