So much for Maria Sharapova at the French Open.
After giving the Russian tennis star a major plug here yesterday in our musical interlude and defending her against the attacks of SI.com, which called her one the least fun athletes to watch, she fell flat on her face in the semifinals today against the underdog, 19-year-old Serb Ana Ivanovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Sharapova succumbed to a slew of unforced errors -- 25 of them!
Earlier, Sharapova reminded us not to expect too much of her at the French Open because she said she feels like "a cow on ice" when playing on clay. Maybe next time they could have the French Open on something more familiar to Maria, like a fashion runway (OK, we're being rude now). Let's see how she does on the grass at Wimbledon, where she won in 2004.
