Francisco Liriano has replaced Jose Contreras on the American League's pitching staff because Contreras started yesterday and wouldn't have been available.

An injustice has been corrected.

Liriano is 10-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings. I'd say he deserves to be in Pittsburgh Tuesday.

Also, David Eckstein has replaced Jose Reyes on the National League team. Reyes cut his left pinkie finger. Edgar Renteria will start in Reyes' place.

Kenny Rogers has been chosen as the starting pitcher for the AL, opposing Brad Penny.

An honest show of hands: How many of you predicted before the season that Brad Penny would be an All-Star, let alone the NL's starter?

Anyone remember the year that it rained in Kansas City, causing a postponement that really disappointed one young, aspiring sportswriter who was spending the summer with his grandparents in Ford City, Pa?

I was really young, so maybe it wasn't Kansas City. Maybe it wasn't the All-Star Game. Maybe I made up the whole thing. But that's how I remember it.
