The football timeline is perfect.

After the Super Bowl ends, fans can look forward to the draft and free agency. As far as fantasy is concerned, you don't start any real research, but in your head you start to think about how Edgerrin James' new home in Arizona will affect his numbers and what kind of impact tight end Vernon Davis will have has a rookie.

Time passes and you occasionally check various sites to see what rankings and mock drafts are available. You see a couple magazines are released when you stop by your local convenience store for some Doritos and Gatorade.

And then before you know it, training camps begin, and your buddy sends you an e-mail titled "Never too early to bet week 1" along with lines for games in early September (OK, maybe that part is just me).

It is official. You are now allowed to jump into football mode.

And of course, with football mode comes preparation for your fantasy draft. To get you in the right frame of mind, I thought we would start thinking about quarterbacks, given the fact that Ravens fans hang their hopes for the 2006 season on Steve McNair.

So what is the value of the 33-year-old veteran? While we will release our official position rankings in the next few weeks, I thought it would be fun to see what others are saying about McNair and his fellow QBs. To get a fair assessment, I took the rankings of six separate sites/publications and found the average for the top-20 QBs going into this season. We'll call it the APR (Average Position Ranking). So where does McNair rank? You'll have to read on.
