The Kansas City Royals made right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar the No. 1 overall pick in today's baseball draft. He's penciled in to start for K.C. tomorrow night against the Rangers.

That's a joke, by the way. It's hard to tell, I realize.

In honor of the first day of the draft, here's a historical list of the No. 1 picks dating to Oakland's selection of catcher Rick Monday in 1965. I don't have a Rick Monday anectdote to share, but feel free to chime in if you do.

The selections range from successful (Alex Rodriguez, Chipper Jones, Ken Griffey Jr.) to miserable (Brien Taylor, Paul Wilson, Shawn Abner).

The Orioles had the top overall pick once, in 1989, when they selected Ben McDonald. Three other former No. 1 selections have played for Baltimore - if you can name them without cheating, email me and I'll send you a cookie.
