Hayden Penn blanked the Cardinals on two hits over three innings, but they've taken a 2-0 lead against Vic Darensbourg in the fourth.

Penn was spectacular in the second inning. He swung his left arm and fielded a ball behind his back, then chased after Jim Edmonds, who was hung up between second and third. Edmonds was so shocked that Penn had the ball, he drifted to a stop and gave up. Penn ended the inning by picking off John Rodriguez.

The only concern with Penn is he appeared to be hurt at one point, but it's hard to tell from up in the press box. He looked like he was fidgeting, trying to get comfortable, after throwing a wild pitch and making that amazing stab of the comebacker. He kept taking deep breaths and lifting his arms above his head after every pitch, but he came back out for the third, so he must have been OK.

Darensbourg replaced Penn and struck out the first batter he faced, Larry Bigbie. Scott Rolen followed with a double and stole third base, and Jim Edmonds doubled into the left field corner. Rodriguez just bounced a single into center field for a 2-0 lead.

The Orioles got four hits off Jason Marquis. Corey Patterson began the game with a gift double. Right fielder Chris Duncan raced to the fence, then charged forward as the ball dropped in front of him. Kevin Millar singled in the third but broke too soon for second and was tagged out. He was halfway between first and second before Marquis spun around.

Jeff Fiorentino and Brandon Fahey also have hits. Fahey lined out to end the fourth after Chris Gomez walked and stole second. The more I see of Fahey, the more I like.
