A Luis Lopez error at third base allowed the final run to score for the Marlins, who defeated the Orioles, 7-2, in a sloppy game that had one redeeming quality: It didn't go into extra innings.
It also was played in the Florida sunshine. Make that two redeeming qualities.
Manager Sam Perlozzo doesn't sound too concerned about Kris Benson. "If he gets them all out during the spring and not the season, it's not going to help us," he said.
Spring training records don't usually mean much, but as the weeks pass in March, the Orioles might want to start getting into the habit of winning.
"I'm not happy about the losses, and I don't like sloppy games," Perlozzo said. "That's for sure."
Along with the errors, center fielder Jeff Fiorentino lost a Mike Kinkade liner in the sun that went for a triple.
Hayden Penn pitches for the Orioles tomorrow against the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, followed by LaTroy Hawkins, Andy Mitchell, Vic Darensbourg and Eddy Rodriguez. Jason Marquis starts for the Cardinals.
Speaking of the Cardinals. Sidney Ponson tossed four scoreless innings yesterday, in case you missed it.
