A Baltimore-born sailor who built his career in intelligence is set to become the Navy's top enlisted official.
Fleet Master Chief Steven S. Giordano is to be sworn in as Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy in September. He will advise Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John M. Richardson on issues affecting enlisted sailors.
Richardson, who announced Giordano's selection at an event in Rhode Island, said choosing among the candidates was one of the toughest decisions he had had to make.
"As we encounter increased competition around the globe, the nation needs a capable and ready Navy today more than ever," Richardson said in a statement. "Master Chief Giordano will play a central role in leading our team through the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow."
Giordano enlisted in the Navy in 1989 and trained for intelligence. He deployed to Bahrain during the 1991 Gulf War and has served on ships and submarines across Europe and the Pacific.
Giordano worked in the Navy's cyber forces before his current assignment in Naples, Italy, as fleet master chief for naval forces in Europe and Africa.
Michael D. Stevens, the current Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, said he is confident his replacement will do a good job.
"Giordano is a great leader and someone who is fully capable to lead our Navy well into the future," said Stevens. "I am very excited for him and his family and there is no doubt in my mind that he will do a magnificent job."
