Scarboro Hills Disc Golf Course is a testament to what a small, but passionate, group of people can do to create something out of nothing. What was unusable land owned by Churchville's Bureau of Waste Management was turned into an 18-hole course attracting players from all over the county and beyond.
It's a game popular with men, perhaps because its rules are much like traditional golf, says Donald Simonetti, president of the Scarboro Hills Disc Golf Club. But it's a whole lot cheaper. "The course is free and you can buy a disc anywhere from $5 to $15," says Simonetti, who got turned onto the game five years ago.
Scarboro Hills is maintained by the Churchville Recreation Council. It's a medium-sized course, but it offers big fun day and night. Players will be happy to see that a second set of tees was installed at shorter lengths so people of all ages can enjoy the game.
At the end of August, the course is host to the Scarboro Scorcher, an annual tournament sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association.
