STATE PARKS
Gunpowder Falls State Park (Baltimore and Harford counties)
Gunpowder Falls State Park, which encompasses nearly 18,000 noncontiguous acres in Harford and Baltimore counties, was established to protect the stream valleys of the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls and the Gunpowder River, which begins at Days Cove where the Big and Little Gunpowders converge.
There are more than 100 miles of trails, including the 21-mile Northern Central Railroad (NCR) Trail, now known as the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, named in honor of the third Maryland Department of Natural Resources secretary. The park features trout fishing opportunities, as well as other freshwater and tidal fishing areas.
Gunpowder Falls State Park areas include the Hereford Area, along York Road in Parkton in Baltimore County; the NCR Torrey C. Brown Trail, which extends from Ashland Road in Baltimore County to the Pennsylvania line; the Central Area, which extends from Baldwin to Days Cove along both river valleys and includes the historic village of Jerusalem Mill; the Hammerman Area, which is in Chase near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Grace Quarters Road, and offers a swimming beach on the Gunpowder River; and Dundee Creek Marina, also located in Chase, which offers boat launching, rowboat rental, fuel and a marina store.
Palmer State Park
Located in central Harford County, Palmer State Park is a 555-acre unbroken tract of forest. Two miles of scenic Deer Creek run through the park. Historic sites can be found along the creek banks, and native flora and fauna can be found in the forested habitat. Access to the park is limited, and there are no maintained hiking trails. Parking areas are limited to roadside pull-offs. But plans are under way to add environmentally friendly recreational activities.
Rocks State Park
Rocks has 855 acres of dense forests and massive boulders rising above Deer Creek. The King and Queen Seat, once a ceremonial gathering place of the Susquehannock Indians, is a natural 190-foot rock outcrop. This well-known cliff, reached by scenic trails, offers a view of the rolling hills and farmland of Harford County. Also preserved on park property are many structural remains from the days when the Maryland and Pennsylvania Raiload wound its way through Rocks, helping the farms and quarries of northern Harford County to prosper.
Deer Creek is popular for fishing and tubing. Secluded glens along its shores are great for picnicking and relaxation.
Susquehanna State Park
Situated along the western bank of the Susquehanna River between Conowingo Dam and Havre de Grace, Susquehanna State Park offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities as well as points of historical significance. The park is home to some of the most popular mountain biking trails in Maryland, and the river beckons anglers and boaters. Susquehanna State Park also contains a very family-friendly campground with traditional campsites and cabins. History buffs will be drawn to the restored Rock Run Historic Area with its working grist mill, the Rock Run House, Jersey Toll House and the remains of the Susquehanna Tidewater Canal.
