In defense of the 'deplorables'

Hillary Clinton has categorized Donald Trump's supporters as either crypto-fascist racists or low-life losers with an under-informed resentment toward establishment swells ("Trump, in Baltimore, calls Clinton's 'deplorable' remark disqualifying," Sept. 12).

Probably the biggest basket of Trump supporters is made up of knowledgeable, hard-working, patriotic Americans who find deplorable the notion of voting for a horrid, pompous, corrupt, venal, paranoid, under-achieving, mirthless, uncharismatic, dynastic fraud who, if she had not married Bill Clinton, would maybe have become the first woman president of the Rotary Club in Skokie, Ill.

Ms. Clinton's vaunted resume is a litany of failure and mediocrity, her feigned empathy for the less fortunate so cynically inauthentic that it drips with contempt, her avarice so shameless that she almost wears it as a badge of honor and her estrangement from truth-telling so tortured that she easily matches Mr. Trump's mendacity.

So no, Ms. Clinton, the great swath of folks who will not be voting for you this November are neither Klan members nor mouth-breathing simpletons. They are, in fact, real Americans who passionately deplore the idea that you and your hound-dog of a husband might return to the White House.
