KAL lampoons budget director Mick Mulvaney defending President Donald Trump's budget ("KAL'S view," May 28). On one side of a seesaw is the military and "the rich" in his cartoon and on the other side is everyone else. If KAL had any desire to depict the truth, he would put Social Security, Medicare and interest payments on the federal debt on one side of the seesaw and everything else on the other.
As long as entitlement programs go forward without any reform, popular and important social programs will continue to be reduced or abandoned. We are now paying the price for a decade of irresponsibility. Interest payments will continue to rise as interest rates rise, putting even more pressure on cuts to domestic spending. Our military needs significant equipment upgrades thanks to eight years of neglect, and raising taxes now would be foolish and detrimental to the economy.
Thus, it is time for President Trump to change course and take leadership on entitlement reform. However, it will be difficult since we can count on the Democratic Party and their pals at The Sun to demagogue the issue, just as KAL is distorting the current budget. Let's hope that some adults in Washington will try to do the right thing even if they have have to endure being slimed by the folks at The Sun. Tough choices must be made if we are to avoid being buried in debt. Too bad KAL doesn't want to make them.
