Nine housing counseling groups in Maryland received about $1.26 million, part of more than $36 million in awards announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
HUD Secretary Julian Castro said the grants would help families improve their housing conditions.
More than $1.1 million of the funds awarded in Maryland went to the nonprofit HomeFree-USA of Riverdale, a HUD-approved group focused on homeownership development, foreclosure intervention and financial empowerment. The other eight groups received from roughly $12,000 to $16,000 each.
Last year, HUD awarded about $40 million for housing counseling groups across the country, including $1.38 million to the same nine organizations in Maryland.
