Cats R Us

This no-kill facility, which operates small shelters in the Annapolis and Arnold areas, seeks volunteers to provide foster homes. Also, volunteers 8 and older are needed to assist with cleaning the shelters, attending adoption shows at PetSmart in Annapolis, making home deliveries and sitting with cats. Detention center

Volunteers 21 and older who pass a background check are needed at the Jennifer Road Detention Center to work in the library, assist with pre-GED classes and the education program, facilitate self-help workshops on parenting, job readiness, financial issues and more. Hospice services

Heartland Hospice, a facility that provides care to patients with limited life expectancy, seeks volunteers 18 and older with a driver's license as friendly visitors to look in on patients in their homes or nursing homes, to serve as vigil volunteers, to sit with patients without immediate family and as bereavement volunteers to call on families of those recently deceased. Literacy council

Tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy and ESL tutoring. After completing training, volunteers arrange their own schedules and locations with the assigned student, or volunteers can tutor at local detention centers. Information: 410-269-4419 or icanread.org.

Light House Shelter

Volunteers 18 and older are needed for duties associated with the food program, children's program, cleaning and maintenance, office and administration, adult education programs and the overnight homeless program. Pro bono professionals are needed to serve the shelter and its clients with skills such as accounting, medicine, law and carpentry. Hours are flexible, and training is provided.
