Literacy council

Tutors are needed to combat adult illiteracy. After completing training, you make your own schedule with your assigned student at a place of your choosing, or you can tutor at local detention centers. Hours are flexible and most work can be done at home. Information: 410-269-4419.

Project Linus

Volunteer "blanketeers" are needed to sew, quilt, knit or crochet washable blankets for children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. Office of Emergency Management

Drivers with four-wheel-drive vehicles are needed to provide transportation for hospital staff and others during inclement weather. Crisis assistance

Serving People Across Neighborhoods works in cooperation with area churches to help people in the community in need of crisis assistance because of evictions, utility turn-off notices, emergency medical or prescription needs, food pantry or other services. Volunteers are needed to staff the office, work in the food pantry Monday and Wednesday mornings, and donate food and other items for the pantry. Information: 410-647-0889 or spanhelps.org.

Blood drives

The Red Cross seeks sponsors for blood drives in the county. The sponsor would be expected to provide the location for the day of donation and recruit donors from the community. For information, call Meg Wright at 443-831-6987 or email meg.wright@redcross.org.

Department of Aging and Disabilities

Volunteers are needed to assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which helps seniors and low-income adults complete their tax returns. Volunteers will be trained by the IRS and the Maryland comptroller's office. Volunteers only help prepare simple 2013 income tax returns, which will be filed electronically. Volunteers do not prepare tax returns involving partnerships or corporations, self-employed persons or rental properties. Volunteers are not required to have a financial background in order to help with the tax returns, but certified public accountants, attorneys, bookkeepers and those with financial training are encouraged to volunteer. Salvation Army

The organization needs volunteers at the 511 S. Crain Highway location to serve lunch to the homeless from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteers are also needed to assist kids with homework at the Boys and Girls Club between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Volunteers undergo background checks. Also needed are volunteers to help with arts and crafts and sports activities from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday. Nonperishable food items and donations of toiletries, clean clothing, large baby diapers, wipes, etc. are always needed.
