You have to love an artist who has an instant reply when asked how she will start to spend her $625,000 MacArthur Fellowship: "Liposuction." Scott's humor is as finely crafted and pointed as her art, which confronts such tough issues as race and violence (especially against women) in ways at once unsettling, wry and beautiful. Scott's distinctive mixed-media sculptures, reflecting a particular passion for bead work, have much to say about Baltimore and the world beyond. The MacArthur grant should ensure a great deal of ever-needed provocation from this marvelous artist for years to come.
