Give Mark and Patricia Joseph an A+ for enterprise. It isn't enough for an educational or arts group to merely demonstrate a need for funds. The Josephs — he's a former president of the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners, and she was a dean at Stevenson University — do a lot of research to figure out how their money can be spent most effectively. It isn't unusual for them to spend more than a year structuring individual gifts, which have benefited the likes of the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Baltimore School for the Arts and the mentoring program Thread.
