Towson High is still a notch below boys lacrosse powers in the county, but the Generals could move closer to the likes of Hereford and Dulaney this season with a team that boasts a good blend of experience, talent and youth.
Seven starters return from a team that went 8-7 last year and fell in the Class 3A-2A North Region final to Hereford by nine goals.
Optimism reigns, however.
“I think we can compete with the big boys,” Towson fourth-year coach John Cummings said. “We are really looking to give those guys competitive games. We are headed in the right direction with this group.”
Cummings likes his attack, which includes senior A.J. Bosse, junior Jack Ware and sophomore Jack Bell.
They combined for 50 goals last year.
“We have the returning attack group that led our team last year,” Cummings said. “I am looking for them to be the rock again this year.”
The midfield is stronger and deeper with juniors Gordan Palmer, Joe Boozer, Jordan Hummel, and Bobby Wigglesworth, a transfer from Calvert Hall.
Junior Aiden Ryan and Graham Sevy and sophomore Kevin McGovern, another Calvert Hall transfer, spearhead the defense.
Senior goalie Matt Hayden will fill the void created by the graduation of Colby Hogan.
“I really like how this team has bonded early in the season,” said Cummings, whose team has beaten Friends and Dundalk and lost to Archbishop Curley this spring. “We have a really great group. They came in in shape and ready for the season. We are looking to get to the next level. I am excited to see where this team can go.”
