The Big Freeze of 1977

The tug Fells Point, travels smoothly on the ice-choked Baltimore Harbor. The Harbor, which had been 100 percent covered in the early parts of the long winter freeze is now reported to be just three-eighths covered. However, the Chesapeake Bay remains ice-locked and part of the Upper Bay is banned to ship travel because the ice is too thick for cutters to break through it. The recent three-day thaw, which is expected to end over the weekend has had little effect on the thick ice. A seagoing Navy tug got stuck in the Tolchester Channel as it tried to assess the depth there.
