The Big Freeze of 1977

The crunching together of numerous ice flow\es in the Chesapeake Bay produced this "floeberg," a 100-foot-long, 40-foot-high frozen mass resembling an iceberg. The navigational beacon in the background, off Love Point at the mouth of the Chester River, is 38 feet high. The massive ice floe lies well east of the main shipping channel to Baltimore, between Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore and North Point on the Western Shore. A National Weather Service spokesman said yesterday the salt-water conglomerations of ice can be as much as 50 feet high.
