Player of the Year: Katie Chrest, Maryvale
The Lions' stellar midfielder simply would not allow her team to lose in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference tournament. The Baltimore City/County Player of the Year took over the tournament with her dazzling stick skills, thread-the-needle passes and explosive transition maneuvers as well as her utter determination.
Trailing 9-8 in the quarterfinal, the senior scored two goals in the final 1:15 to nip St. Paul's, 10-9. In the title game, Chrest scored four goals and had three assists to lead the No. 2 Lions past Bryn Mawr, 9-6.
"She led Maryvale to the championship, and it took 14 years for someone to come in and do that," said Lions coach Erin Stewart. "She was invaluable in what she brought to the team. She really was graced with a God-given talent, and not many lacrosse players have that."
Chrest's game lacked nothing. She scored 47 goals and contributed 22 assists, but she also dominated the midfield and was a force on the draw and a pest on defense. A first-team All-Metro selection last season and a two-time Greater Baltimore regional All-American, Chrest is headed for Duke University in the fall.
Coach of the Year: Karen Tengwall, Broadneck
Even before the Bruins took the field, expectations were high. Picked in preseason to win the Anne Arundel County league, the Bruins opened the season with losses to St. Mary's and C. Milton Wright that took some of the wind out of their sails.
But Tengwall, in her fifth year as coach, rallied her players. She told them to forget the hype and focus on the game.
The Bruins listened well as they closed out the regular season with 11 straight wins and went on to win the first girls lacrosse state title in school history.
Even losing to Severna Park in the county championship game didn't faze Tengwall.
"That was the best thing that could've happened," she said. "It would've been way too difficult to beat them three times in a row, but we knew that we had the confidence to beat them."
No. 5 Broadneck went on to upend the two-time defending state champion Falcons in the regional final and eventually grabbed the Class 4A-3A state crown with a 10-3 victory over Dulaney.
First team
Jessica Allen, Hereford
There wasn't anything this junior midfielder could not do. Her athleticism combined with an ability to read the field and anticipate the action made her a threat to whip a behind-the-back shot, spark the Bulls' transition game or make key defensive stops.
Allen finished with 49 goals and 27 assists. In the Class 2A-1A state final, she scored five goals and had three assists as the No. 3 Bulls beat Southern of Anne Arundel County, 22-4, to run the title table for the second straight year, winning Baltimore County, regional and state championships.
Allen was named a Greater Baltimore regional All-American.
Megan Burker, Bryn Mawr
Nothing ever seemed to rattle the senior midfielder on the field. Always a calming presence for the IAAM A Conference runner-up, the importance of Burker's composure was never more evident than in the A Conference championship game, a 9-6 loss to Maryvale.
With the Lions' defense giving away little, she managed to score five goals, most of them on great individual efforts.
Instrumental in controlling the ball and setting up the attack, Burker finished with 38 goals and 21 assists for the No. 6 Mawrtians.
A Greater Baltimore regional All-American, Burker will play next year at Stanford University.
Laura Carper, Mount Hebron
Strong and intense, the senior was the heart of a defense that gave up just 3.4 goals a game and did not allow any opponent to score in double figures.
With her seemingly effortless style, Carper rarely made a mistake that led to a goal. Great at reading the attack and picking up the cutters, she also unleashed a fierce check.
Carper led the Vikings with 20 take-aways and scooped up 51 ground balls. Her caused turnovers were instrumental in jump-starting the transition, and she contributed two goals and three assists.
An honorable mention Greater Baltimore regional All-American, Carper is off to Loyola College.
Laura Cipro, Mount Hebron
The top-line defender on the area's stingiest defense, the junior made stopping big scorers look easy: She simply frustrated them with her quickness and body positioning.
Cipro always drew the toughest assignment and shut down some of the best. Against St. Stephen's/St. Agnes of Alexandria, Va., she did not allow Kristin Zimmer, one of its top scorers, a single shot. In a 14-5 victory over St. Mary's, she held top scorer Mary Key to a single point, and in a 11-7 defeat of Liberty, she held Becky Trumbo to a single goal.
A Greater Baltimore regional All-American, Cipro was second on the team with 14 take-aways and had 41 ground balls.
Kate Hickman, Severna Park
The senior midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough season to become the Anne Arundel County Player of the Year, emerging as the most consistent -- and dangerous -- player in the county.
Hickman led the No. 7 Falcons in scoring with 48 goals and 12 assists. Her ability to carry the ball from the defensive end to the offensive zone paved the way for the Falcons to capture their fourth county title since 1997.
A heady player who created space to shoot with her quick feet, Hickman excelled all over the field. A Chesapeake regional All-American, she will play lacrosse next year at Vanderbilt.
Megan Huether, Maryvale
The area's premier goalie for the second straight season, the senior excelled in and out of the nets. Intense, quick and focused, Huether allowed an average of 5.3 goals and had a 56 percent save rate while facing the area's best attack players in almost every game.
But what set her apart was her ability to control the ground and the air around the crease with her aggressive style. Unafraid to step out against a driving attacker, Huether could also intercept passes anywhere near the goal and scarf up ground balls to spark the Lions' transition game.
Huether, two-time Greater Baltimore regional All-American, will move on to Duke.
Christina Juras, McDonogh
The junior attack wing put the zip in the Eagles' transition and contributed to every aspect of their game.
Lightning quick and fiercely competitive, Juras could simply overwhelm opponents in the midfield. She won 67 ground balls and controlled 24 draws. She also made 14 interceptions
Once she had the ball, she proved almost unstoppable. Excellent speed, stick skills and field vision allowed her to strike in transition or feed the ball to her teammates.
Juras, a Greater Baltimore regional All-American, led the Eagles (8-7-1) in scoring (82 points) as well as in goals scored (57).
Ardith Lindsey, Bryn Mawr
A stellar line defender, Lindsey was a critical player in the No. 6 Mawrtians' drive to the IAAM A Conference championship game.
The senior led a unit that gave up just 6.8 goals a game and allowed only two opponents -- No. 1 Mount Hebron and No. 3 Hereford -- to score in double figures.
Athletic and 6 feet tall with great skills, Lindsey proved difficult to challenge. She always drew the toughest assignments and excelled at denying her mark the ball.
A Greater Baltimore regional All-American, Lindsey signed to play for Virginia.
Melissa McCarthy, Mount Hebron
A repeat All-Metro first-team performer, the senior remained among the area's best players despite being hampered by a stress fracture in her right leg.
Still, McCarthy's tremendous speed and stamina, combined with an overwhelming determination to win, made it almost impossible to double-team the Vikings on attack. McCarthy would simply run right around it.
Her midfield play proved vital to the No. 1 Vikings' run to an unbeaten season and their sixth straight state championship. One of many offensive options, McCarthy also scored 38 goals and had 10 assists.
A Greater Baltimore regional All-American, McCarthy is headed for North Carolina.
Brooke Richards, Broadneck
A second-team All-Metro selection last season, the senior provided many of the fireworks in the No. 5 Bruins' rise to their first state championship.
The Maryland-bound midfielder led Anne Arundel County in goals scored (56), but her attack skills proved as versatile as her all-around skills. Richards, who usually drew the opposition's best defender, also contributed 51 assists.
In an 8-7 victory over Severna Park during the regular season, Richards scored three second-half goals in less than five minutes. She struck again in the regional final between the two rivals, scoring a goal and assisting on the game-winner in a 4-3 Bruins victory.
She was named an honorable mention Chesapeake regional All-American.
Chrissy Rude, Hereford
At 5 feet 11, the junior attacker knew how to use her size and strength to challenge defenders and overpower them one-on-one.
The honorable mention Greater Baltimore regional All-American led the Bulls with 71 goals, including six in the Class 2A-1A state final victory over Southern of Anne Arundel County. She scored on 55 percent of her shots.
Rude came through in all the big games, scoring three times in a 9-8 overtime loss to Bryn Mawr, four in a 10-9 overtime win over Liberty and another four in a 15-11 win over Bryn Mawr.
Rude, who had nine assists, exhibited good stickwork and a keen eye for the nets. Able to go strong right or left, she could score from anywhere in the arc.
Stephanie Scurachio, Mount Hebron
When it came to creativity on attack, few players could match this repeat first-team All-Metro selection.
With her exceptional stick stills, last year's Howard County Player of the Year excelled at scoring from just about every possible angle, and she could nail a behind-the-back shot with potent accuracy.
The senior midfielder finished with 49 goals and 35 assists. She scored five times and had two assists in the Vikings' 18-7 victory over Annapolis in the state championship game.
A Greater Baltimore regional honorable mention All-American, Scurachio is bound for North Carolina.
Coco Stanwick, Notre Dame Prep
One of the smartest line attackers around, the junior ran the No. 8 Blazers' potent offense, making the decisions in settled situations and in transition.
She demonstrated superb stickwork and shot selection. Despite being face-guarded or double-teamed in almost every game, Stanwick scored 43 goals.
Her field vision and anticipation kept her thinking ahead of opposing defenses and helped her in dishing out 39 assists.
Stanwick earned honorable mention Greater Baltimore regional All-American status for the second year in a row.
Becky Trumbo, Liberty
The two-time Carroll County Player of the Year and first-team All-Metro midfielder, Trumbo wrapped up a stellar career as the county's all-time leading scorer with 379 points.
This season, the senior led the county in goals (85) and assists (47) to bring her career totals to 249 and 130, respectively.
The cog that drove the No. 4 Lions to a 15-2 season that ended only when they ran into No. 1 Mount Hebron in the regional final, Trumbo dominated the midfield. She led the team in draw controls with 109, winning a school-record 17 in one game.
Trumbo, a four-time All-Carroll County selection who will play for Towson next season, was a Greater Baltimore regional All-American.
Meagan Voight, Liberty
A four-time All-Carroll County choice, Voight polished off her career as the second-highest scorer in Lions history. The senior attacker accumulated 201 goals and 99 assists.
This season, Voight put up big numbers from the midfield, tallying 65 goals and 41 assists to finish second in the county in scoring.
But her talents weren't limited to the offensive end of the field. Voight excelled at defense as well and was a catalyst in transition. She ranked among the team leaders in interceptions (six) and blocks (four). She also had 31 ground balls and won 17 draws.
Voight will move on to Johns Hopkins next season.
Kristen Waagbo, Mount Hebron
The Howard County Player of the Year proved to be the most potent weapon in the No. 1 Vikings' relentless attack. The 6-foot Waagbo reached new heights this season, leading the Vikings with 61 goals and contributing 33 assists.
The junior scored on 60 percent of her shots and had some of her best games against ranked opponents, including a five-goal, two-assist effort in a 14-4 win over Bryn Mawr. When Waagbo was face-guarded or double-teamed, she could adjust. She scored only one goal in the state final victory over Annapolis, but she contributed a state tournament-record six assists.
