Sandy Hook mourns while others seek escape with 'Dexter' and 'Divas'

Online Trends for Monday, Dec. 17, 2012

Days after the deadly Sandy Hook school shooting, the tragedy is still dominating news sites, social media and search traffic. The coverage is splintering a bit, but major trends include: last night's emotional speech by President Obama, the Westboro Baptist Church's plans to protest the funerals of the victims, and more details about the ammunition and weapons that Adam Lanza used.

Meanwhile, many other Americans sought to escape the grisly news and took refugee in escapist TV fare. Sunday's programming from "VH1 Divas" to "Dexter" to a WWE event all are attracting search traffic this morning. Baltimore's own Stacy Keibler (above right) was presenter at "VH1 Divas." The Reuters photo caption generously calls her an "actress." And watching a show like "Dexter" may seem like an odd choice after Friday, but I guess when you commit to a series, you're all in.

Why: The world lost a huge talent last February when The Voice passed away unexpectedly in her hotel room in Los Angeles. While Whitney was reigned supreme as the queen of ballads, she just as much ruled dance songs. VH1 DIVAS honored the incomparable legend with a show-stopping performance by Jordin Sparks, Ledisi and Melanie Fiona. [VH1]

Why: WWE pretty much saved the best for last, in terms of pay-per-view offerings.  Even with WWE champion CM Punk off the card because of injury, WWE TLC was a terrific pay-per-view event with several great things to write home about. [Baltimore Sun
